Walking is a great activity that can be enjoyed right throughout the year and from cradle to grave. Since settling in West Cork I have enjoyed getting out into the mountains and enjoying ... well that is the problem, how do you explain exactly what can be experienced out on one of these walks? Ideally, you need to get out there and do the walks yourself.
It is extremely difficult to explain to others what it means to break through a line of trees or crest a mountain ridge and see lakes/mountains or the coastline as the monks of yore or Fionn and the Fianna must have experienced them.
These Hill Walking Videos are my attempt to bring you closer to what you can experience on these Hills and Mountains. They are not a Walking Guide and do not in any way attempt to explain how to approach or progress on a walk. For this information, I defer to people who have gone before me and written authorative books on the subject. Where appropriate, I give suggested reading based on books that I have used.
So, Browse and get out HILL WALKING !
DANGER
I would like to quote an extract from Kevin Corcoran's authorative book on the Kerry Walks (although it is equally true for all walks).
Common sense and discretion should always be used when in the wilderness, especially if you are not familiar with the ways of the countryside. Please take note of the following points:
MOUNTAINS:
The higher peaks are prone to rapidly descending fogs and mists which will make it impossible to descend safely, thus attempt these only on fine clear days when there is no threat of rain and its accompanying low cloud.
CLIFFS:
These should be treated with the greatest respect, especially in wet and windy weather when they can be prone to erosion and instant collapse. Keep your distance from them and on no account allow children free rein near them.
WAVES:
There is such a thing as a freak wave that thunders onto the shore during all types of weather but especially during wild and windy weather. These can turn up irregularly every fifteen to twenty minutes, depending on the swell. Many people like to get near the crashing waves on a headland or rock, measuring their safety distance by the waves immediately observed. Tragically, many lives have been lost year after year as unwary visitors have been caught by a sudden and unexpected enormous freak wave.
