Videography - Starter Course

This course is on-hold for the present due to pressure of other work.

Course PreRequisites and Goals

This Videography Training Course is given by Oliver Leamy and is aimed at the novice / beginner. If you have never shot a single footage of video or you have drawers full of holiday footage and don't know how to make them presentable - this course will give you practical information to move you along in a structured way.

The goal is to be able to use your camcorder and produce a 'clean' video to show to your friends/family including voiceover and possible background music as well.

Videography Course Overview

The following gives an overview of the modules that will be covered during the day.

Equipment

This will give you an insight into a range of camcorders - from the standard consumer handheld right through to a high definition shoulder mount professional camcorder. Canon equipment will be used throughout.

Sound is also very important (and an area that is often neglected), you will get an overview of what is available and under what circumstances they are used. The types shown will be Canon and Sennheiser.

Techniques

While you can produce acceptable videos by simply pointing and shooting, the basis of this course is to enhance your final production - and it is a production! How to hold the camera for best results, situation of subjects, composition of subject and background, sound.

Practical - 1

Out and about shooting, the idea being to practice good shot composition in terms of visuals and sound.

The Computer

This will entail very basic computer operation. Copying your footage from the camcorder to the computer, viewing and making decisions on how and where to edit the scenes so as to produce a pleasing short video.

LUNCH

The Story

You will be given a written description of the locality and that will be used as a script for a voice-over narrative. There will be a discussion on the types of shots that would bring life to the narrative.

The Recce

The recce. Have a look around the locality for shots that will fit the storyline, work out angles and compose a shooting list. This will be reviewed before going 'out and about' to ensure that everyone is happy with the goals of the final practical - The Shoot!

The Shoot

The shoot - based on the recce. Participants will be encouraged to work collaboratively and to learn from each other. There will be plenty of time to experiment and get assistance from the tutor - Oliver Leamy.

Producing the Video

Offloading your footage onto a laptop and then editing the scenes using Windows Movie Maker (if you have your own preference in terms of a computer video editor, then bring it along on your laptop and some one-to-one tuition can be provided to iron out any problems that you may have encountered).

The voice over will be recorded (and time permitting a music track will also be added). Finally The Video will be generated on DVD for you to keep.

Videography Course - Cost

The course fee is €60 per person. Windows laptops will be available for offloading and editing tape content.

Camcorders are not generally provided but handheld consumer Canon camcorders can be rented by prior arrangement at a cost of €30 for the day.
